Must read。 History, life truths, honesty, mental health and value of friendship are addressed in this book。 It's not an easy story, but it reads easily。 The lessons from the past are still relevant for the present。 Strongly recommend for teens and young adults。 I am glad the author decided to share his story and saddened by the news of his death last month。 May he rest in peace。 Must read。 History, life truths, honesty, mental health and value of friendship are addressed in this book。 It's not an easy story, but it reads easily。 The lessons from the past are still relevant for the present。 Strongly recommend for teens and young adults。 I am glad the author decided to share his story and saddened by the news of his death last month。 May he rest in peace。 。。。more

What a book。 Such an amazing story of hope。 Made me look at the world and how I live my life differently。

This 99-year-old holocaust survivor got off the train with his parents。。。 and never saw them again。 He never got to tell his mama he loved her so he asks us to do it with our own mothers。 Yes, this is a horrifying story but there is hope and kindness sprinkled in there。 Puts your own life in perspective。 Recommended。

I cried lots listening to the first half of this audiobook。 During the 2nd part, I kept thinking about coincidences like both of us living in Coogee and the service station he owned being up the road from where I now live。 It made me realise how connected we all are and how unfair it is that these atrocities could be allowed to happen to people because of their identity。 It made me think about how our own First Nations peoples have encountered dispossession and genocide too, and that horrible at I cried lots listening to the first half of this audiobook。 During the 2nd part, I kept thinking about coincidences like both of us living in Coogee and the service station he owned being up the road from where I now live。 It made me realise how connected we all are and how unfair it is that these atrocities could be allowed to happen to people because of their identity。 It made me think about how our own First Nations peoples have encountered dispossession and genocide too, and that horrible attitudes still exist today。 I know the book is about being the happiest man in the world but i found myself feeling quite depressed by it all 。。。more

This book was written by my friend, Eddie Jaku who lived a very hard life as a Jew from Germany during WWII。 He talks so beautifully and there are many quotes in the book that are fantastic about family, friends and hope。 His story is extraordinary。 He was arrested as both a Jew and a German throughout the war。 He was tortured, starved and worked to bear death。 He lost his family, his home and his possessions but somehow always had hope。 His constant reunions with Kurt had to be a gift sent from This book was written by my friend, Eddie Jaku who lived a very hard life as a Jew from Germany during WWII。 He talks so beautifully and there are many quotes in the book that are fantastic about family, friends and hope。 His story is extraordinary。 He was arrested as both a Jew and a German throughout the war。 He was tortured, starved and worked to bear death。 He lost his family, his home and his possessions but somehow always had hope。 His constant reunions with Kurt had to be a gift sent from God。 If more people had his disposition - the WORLD would be the HAPPIEST place on earth。 A true inspiration in every way。 。。。more

This was a very interesting book。 I’ve read tons of things about the holocaust and survivors, but this one was just incredible。 He tells the story of his struggles in a very matter-of-fact way, but what comes through the most is his innate humanity。 He tries to be the best person he can be and help others。 Because of his survival of the holocaust he decides he is the happiest man on earth and listening to this book, I believe him。 Very inspiring-I listened to it and it was a great listen。

More than a memoir, this is an account of a very difficult journey of a German-born Jew surviving the Holocaust。 Though it is an amazing story of survival the book it itself lacks detail and for those who have not learned a lot about WW2 from the Jewish experience - it feels like it’s missing key parts of the story。 I imagine it lacks detail due to the fact that it was written down later in life。 The story goes through phases of Eddie’s incredible history but does not provide details or a lot of More than a memoir, this is an account of a very difficult journey of a German-born Jew surviving the Holocaust。 Though it is an amazing story of survival the book it itself lacks detail and for those who have not learned a lot about WW2 from the Jewish experience - it feels like it’s missing key parts of the story。 I imagine it lacks detail due to the fact that it was written down later in life。 The story goes through phases of Eddie’s incredible history but does not provide details or a lot of context into the situations that he’s in。 I wanted more not because I don’t know the history, but I felt the oversimplification of some of the facts may be misleading and does not describe how horrifying the atrocities of his experience really were。 I believe this is a must read, but I hope that for readers it will be one of many Holocaust memoirs because there is so much between the lines that was not written。 。。。more
